The Audio Playground Synthesizer Museum

K5000S

Introduced at the summer NAMM in Nashville, Tennessee 1996.
And starded shipping later that fall, was in production for 3 years.
Kawai stoped production in the fall of 1998.

Kawai's Advanced Additive synthesizer, with an incredible Arpeggiator, Performance Switches,
extra ports, and most importantly, Macro Control Knobs... 'cause synth programming is the most fun with knobs!

The K5000S brings incredible performance features to one of the most powerful synthesis engines evercreated.

The power of the K5000S is in Kawai's Advanced Additive synthesis. With additive synthesis you can create any sound in your
imagination... sounds never heard by anyone before. Each one becomes a totally unique timbre, a creative exploration into a new
world of sound. And to this powerful synthesis we've added many extraordinary control and performance features. Not only do
they allow for easy editing, they make playing the K5000S a blast!

Macro Control Knobs

The front panel of the K5000S features 16 macro control knobs. Designed for both programming ease and dramatic live
performances, these knobs give you direct control over the most powerful Advanced Additive parameters. You'll find familiar
functions such as filter cutoff, resonance, attack, and release. But you'll also have control over proprietary Advanced Additive
parameters... Even/Odd harmonics balance, Formant Filter bias, Formant Filter speed, High and Low harmonics levels, and more!
We've even given you 4 user assignable knobs, each capable of controlling two macro parameters simultaneously. Each Macro
Control Knob sends and receives MIDI Control Change messages, allowing you to record all knob movement directly into your
sequencer. Also, all macro edits can be saved directly into patch memory.

Performance Switches

Conveniently located just above the Modulation and Pitch Bend wheels are 3 performance switches... Portamento On/Off and two
user assignable. We've also provided jacks for two user assignable foot switches, along with sustain and expression, on the rear
panel... perfect for those times when demanding music keeps your hands on the keyboard.

Arpeggiator

The K5000S features one of the most powerful and creative arpeggiators found on any keyboard. There are a total of 40 patterns...
up/down, chord gate & trigger, random patterns... even 8 user editable patterns. A separate speed control knob allows you to
control the arpeggiator speed in real-time, or you can sync to an external MIDI clock. Naturally, the arpeggiator sends MIDI note
data for recording into a sequencer or controlling external sound sources.

Multi Patches

In addition to two banks of Advanced Additive single patches, the K5000S features a bank of 64 Multi patches. In a multi patch,
up to 4 zones of single patches can be assigned in any combination of layers, splits, zone wraps, and velocity switches. Each zone
can also be assigned to receive on its own individual MIDI channel.

Effects

An expansive array of effect algorithms, plus reverbs and EQ are available for application in any Single or Multi patch. 37 types of
effects, from Choruses and Flanges to Stereo Delays and Distortions, are accessed through 4 parallel effects buses. In addition, 11
different reverb types can be applied, along with a 7 band Graphic Equalizer. All effects data, including routing and algorithm
parameters, are stored into patch memory.

Disk Data Storage and System Update

A 3.5" disk drive is provided for storage of single and multi patches along with user arpeggiator patterns. For your convenience
and peace of mind, all system updates are loaded into the K5000S from disk... no more expensive and troublesome EPROM
exchanges!
